A New Way of Thinking, Part 2

Happy New Year! Okay, this may a bit late to be celebrating a holiday that happened more than two weeks ago. But, how are your New Year's resolutions coming along? Already skipped a couple of days at the gym? Had a case of the munchies and polished off stale Christmas cookies? Or, did you embrace a new way of thinking like we highlighted in last month's article? If so, Well Done! If not, the new year is ripe with health change possibilities!

We've all seen the gym membership, diet program and weight loss ads. Though your aim may not include weight loss, it does require a change in behavior and thinking in order to achieve your goal. Note the word, "your". That's correct. This is YOUR target, so think long term and start small. We've all heard the old adage, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time...". The behaviors you would like to change will likely take time and various steps for you to ultimately meet with success.

Achievement begins with taking step one toward the change you would like to make. This sounds simple, but how many times have you heard people say, "I'm going to start my diet after the holidays."? It is easier to postpone eating less, beginning an exercise regimen or both, but the delay can lead to health issues. Contemplate and then embrace the health changes you want to begin.

Another key to forward momentum is to include at least one person on your "team" to encourage you along your health journey. Remember, this isn't a quick fix, so you will need someone to celebrate your successes and to remind you to "get back on the horse", if you fall short of your objective. If your health partner has a different goal in mind, that is okay. Studies have shown that exercising with someone and/or having family join you in eating healthier have garnered better long term outcomes than going it alone.

Whatever health behavior you would like to change, take some time to reflect. Perhaps a new way of thinking will enable you to cross the finish line this new year. The best of health to you!
